Avec un simple t\u00e9lescope, on peut distinguer sa forme caract\u00e9ristique en spirale, tr\u00e8s semblable \u00e0 celle de notre propre Voie lact\u00e9e. Ce qui la rend encore plus remarquable, c\u2019est sa petite galaxie voisine, NGC 5195, qui semble \u00eatre aspir\u00e9e par l\u2019attraction gravitationnelle de M51. Cette interaction provoque des d\u00e9formations et stimule la naissance de nouvelles \u00e9toiles dans les bras spiraux. L\u00e0 se trouve Sagittarius A*, un trou noir supermassif d\u2019environ quatre millions de masses solaires. Celles-ci sont toujours orient\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019oppos\u00e9 du Soleil, pouss\u00e9es par le vent solaire et la lumi\u00e8re. Il est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour sa structure en terrasses et les plus petits crat\u00e8res qui pars\u00e8ment son fond. Copernic, plus pr\u00e8s du centre, est un crat\u00e8re relativement jeune (environ 800 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es) et tr\u00e8s lumineux, entour\u00e9 de rayons de d\u00e9bris projet\u00e9s lors de son impact.
